City employee Earth Hour contest
As part of the City of McKinney's effort to promote Earth Hour activities beyond just one hour and to engage all city employees, OES and Building Maintenance have teamed up to introduce a new spin for the local institution participation for 2011 Earth Hour initiatives. Fourteen city buildings connected to the recently installed remote energy monitoring system will be evaluated for reductions in energy consumption. The Building Maintenance team has compiled baseline energy consumption data for a comparable time period/climate conditions.
The new remote energy monitoring system was funded by the DOE Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant. This system will allow the Building Maintenance team to remotely track energy consumption and energy cost savings by building facility.
The Contest begins Friday, March 25 at 8:00 a.m. and ends on Monday, March 28 at 8:00 a.m. Evaluation criteria will be based on reduction in energy consumption (85 points) - comparing baseline data to data recorded during the contest period and 15 points for development of creative strategies. Creative strategies include team collaboration to develop specific steps to go above and beyond the usual targets for reducing energy consumption.
Each building is required to register and provide a brief description of the creative strategies. The fourteen buildings competing are: Senior Recreation Center, Facility Services Building D, Facility Services Building A, Facility Services Building B, Community Center, Old Settler's Park and Recreation Center, Fire Station #1, Downtown Library, City Hall, Development Services, McKinney Performing Arts Center, Annex B, Municipal Courts and the Public Safety Building. The winning department will be announced the week after Earth Hour.
Lights Out McKinney 2010 was a huge success!
The Goddard School
 |
Last year (2010) the Goddard School in McKinney invited Martha Cavazos Fipps, Environmental Education Coordinator to their Lights Out Ceremony. All the children in attendance wore "I am not afraid of the dark" stickers on their clothing to commemorate the event. At 10:00 am the lights were officially turned off and the children went outside to learn more about protecting the environment and enjoy the sunshine.
